The first of two nights in Washington DC. A great little toe-tapper of a gig this one as the Crims really seem to be enjoying themselves in a spirited performance. TJ Mathews observed “All four band members smiled many times tonight at the 930.
Eagle-eared listeners will notice that portions of Thela sounded rather stripped back. Jon Benfield who was in the audience explains why: “Adrian breaks a string during his first solo. Robert laughed at Adrian as he missed his solo and frantically grabbed another guitar provided by the roadie...Fripp just played right thru smiling the whole time”
Of Deception Jon wrote “Trey was amazing on this tune. He used the electronic ebow thingy for a very ethereal piece reminiscent of the Dueling Sticks from Cirkus. Adrian came out to the alcoves above the balcony and waved at us!! Trey put on a beautiful show for this oneRobert got up and gave him a standing ovation (we would have stood up had we been sitting!)”
At the end of Heroes Jon noticed Fripp throwing objects out into the crowd: “I think it was Adrian’s slide?” Don Wasser who’d brought some left-over Halloween candy to the gig explains. was also in the crowd explains what the objects actually were. “I was literally right in front of Trey Gunn...at the end of the main part of the show, I decided to pull out the candy [Trey] was like: what's that?... I gave him one. Then Pat saw...& said he'd like a piece. Then, during the (second?) encore, I gave Trey the other two pieces, for Robert and Adrian. Long story short: At the end of the show, Robert looked at the candy and decided to throw them into the crowd. Woo-hoo! What a riot!”
