All songs by ZZ Top except for Petrified
Kendall Street Company pays tribute to ZZ Top under the moniker “KSCZ Top.” On Halloween night they opened for Pigeons Playing Ping Pong in Indianapolis. Handbills were to distributed to fans upon arrival with the information below:
“Come all ye Beer Drinkers & Hellraisers!
One night only!
Kendall Street Company presents
“KSCZ Top”
The life and music of the legendary trio from Houston, Texas. A-haw haw haw haw
Featuring:
Ben Laderberg as Billy Gibbons
Louis Smith as Billy Gibbons
Jake Vanaman as Billy Gibbons
Ryan Wood as Frank Beard
Brian Roy as Dusty Hill”
Dressed in cowboy hats, long luscious beards, and cheap sunglasses, the band enters the stage and opens with “Sharp Dressed Man.” After some warm up jamming the band ends the tune and Ben gives Ryan the nod to start “Gimme All Your Lovin’”.
Jake takes his first harmonica solo ever on “Waitin’ on the Bus.” As is tradition, the band transitions directly into “Jesus Just Left Chicago.” They jam the shit out of the ending.
“Just Got Paid” rocks pretty hard. Ben takes longer pause in the intro to hype up the crowd. Also sick extended sax solo.
Ryan takes over on lead vox for “Cheap Sunglasses.” He is indeed sporting a pair of cheap sunglasses. Ben sneaks in some Jimmy Herring Project Z licks in the end breakdown.
Ben and Louis trade licks in “I’m Bad, I’m Nationwide” and then the band peaks hard. Ben teases “Voodoo Child” in honor of Pigeons’ “Jimi Shelter” Halloween theme later that night. Also fitting is that Billy Gibbons was Jimi Hendrix’ favorite guitar player.
“Legs” is peak 80s ZZ Top. What an era. They don’t write them like that no more.
According to some sources Tush is slang for “plush” or “deluxe” https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-lists/billy-gibbons-my-life-in-15-songs-151784/heard-it-on-the-x-1975-144228/
“Petrified” is the only non-ZZ Top song played all night. It definitely ZZ Top influence in their though with the guitar riffs and what not.
“La Grange” is the only ZZ Top tune the band knew previous to embarking on this project. Have mercy!
KSCZ Top ends their set with their version of the Sam and Dave number “I Thank You.”
