  • Released on September 24, 1971

  • Merl Saunders overdubbed organ on "Wharf Rat," "Playin' In The Band," and "Bertha"

  • Also known as "Skull & Roses." "Skullfuck" was a working title for the album, but Joe Smith of Warner Brothers nixed it. This was the band's first gold record. The early releases had a "skull and roses" sticker enclosed with the album. This album contained those famous words on the inside cover: "Dead freaks unite. Who are you? Where are you? How are you? Send us your name and address and we'll keep you informed."

  • "Johnny B. Goode" is from the "Sufi Benefit" show of March 24, 1971 at Winterland; the first three notes of "Johnny B. Goode" are the last notes of "Greatest Story Ever Told".

  • "Big Railroad Blues" and "Not Fade Away" > "Going Down The Road Feeling Bad" are from April 5, 1971 at the Manhattan Center, New York City.
